Scholastic Distinction Scholarship Competition

The Scholastic Distinction Scholarship Program recognizes the top academic students from across Canada and around the world. The Scholastic Distinction Scholarships are among the most valuable and prestigious undergraduate scholarships awarded by the University of Alberta. Approximately 70 scholarships from $7,500 to $50,000 are available annually.

The Scholastic Distinction Scholarship Competition is open to entrance, transfer, and continuing U of A undergraduate students.

High School Candidates


Postsecondary Candidates

Eligibility

To compete for a Scholastic Distinction Scholarship you must:

  • be entering an undergraduate degree program at the U of A in September 2010
  • have maintained award averages of approximately 95%+ in Grades 10, 11, and 12.

Selection

Scholarships are awarded based on

  • Grades 10 and 11 award averages
  • completed and in-progress Grade 12 grades or a Grade 12 award average if available
  • projected Grade 12 award average
  • individual ranking in graduating class
  • academic reference
  • student essay

Decisions will be based on marks available at the time of application.

Award Average

We will calculate your award averages for Grades 10, 11, and 12 respectively using your English mark and your four highest marks in Groups A (Humanities), B (Fine Arts), and C (Sciences) subjects. A maximum of one Fine Arts subject may be used for each year. Equivalent courses will be used for non-Alberta students.

How to apply/be nominated

To compete for a Scholastic Distinction scholarship you must:
  • Applications must be typed. You can type in the PDF form on screen. Follow the instructions on the first page of the application. Download the application here.
  • High school students must be nominated by their high school to compete for Scholastic Distinction Scholarships.
  • Provide your completed application form to your nominator (a high school official who will support your application). Download the nomination form here.
  • Have your nominator download the PDF nomination form, and complete and return the form along with your application and a transcript of your marks to the U of A Student Awards Office by March 1.

Eligibility - Transfer Students

To compete for a Scholastic Distinction Scholarship you must:

  • be transferring to an undergraduate degree program at the U of A in September 2010
  • have achieved an average of approximately 95% in high school
  • have maintained the same level of excellence at the postsecondary level.

Eligibility - Continuing U of A Undergrads

To compete for a Scholastic Distinction scholarship you must

  • be a continuing U of A student transferring into the School of Business, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Law, or the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry in September 2010. Please note that the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry select recipients through a nomination process and no application is required.
  • be a continuing U of A student entering the second year of studies in the Faculty of Engineering or the Faculty of Science (studying Geology, Geophysics, or Environmental Earth Science). Please note that these Faculties select students through a nomination process and no application is required.
  • have achieved an average of approximately 95%+ in high school
  • have maintained the same level of excellence at the postsecondary level.

Getting results

We notify applicants of the competition results starting in April/May 2010.

Cashing in

Scholarship funds for successful applicants will be available in September 2010 upon confirmation of full-time registration at the U of A.
