Undergraduate Leadership Awards for Continuing Students

The following scholarships fall under the Undergraduate Leadership Awards Competition and are open to continuing undergraduate students.

Alumni 75th Anniversary Scholarship

Field of Study: Open

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student with superior academic acheivement who is registered full-time in the second last year of studies and who has attended the University of Alberta for at least the two previous years. Recipient will be selected on the basis of leadership abilities and potential as demonstrated by contributions to campus life and to the University of Alberta community. Previous recipients of the Alumni Association's Reginald C Lister Memorial Scholarships and the Maimie S Simpson Scholarships are not eligible for this award.

Matthew J Ashton Leadership Prize

Field of Study: Marketing, Business Economics or Political Science

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement registered in any year of an undergraduate program. Recipient will be selected on the basis of academic standing and demonstrated interest in the fields of marketing, business economics or political science. Preference is to be given for elected participation in university clubs, associations, and/or student government.

Dr Larry Beauchamp Leadership Scholarship

Field of Study: Secondary Education (Physical Education Major)

Conditions: Awarded to an undergraduate student with superior academic achievement in their final year of study in the Faculty of Education. Recipient will be selected on the basis of demonstrated leadership in extracurricular and community activities related to enhancing physical activity, volunteer sports or coaching activities, and academic achievement.

Funded by: Endowed by the friends and colleagues of Larry Beauchamp in recognition of his tremendous contributions to the Education community through his tenure with the Department of Secondary Education, and eight years as Dean of the Faculty of Education.

The Gerry Berkhold Undergraduate Award

Field of Study: School of Business

Conditions: Awarded to a student from rural Alberta with satisfactory academic standing entering the third or fourth year of study for a Bachelor of Commerce who has graduated from an Alberta high school outside the metropolitan centers of Edmonton and Calgary. Selection based on demonstrated leadership through involvement and participation in university or community organizations and academic standing, with preference given to a student with demonstrated financial need.

Helen Biltek Leadership Award

Field of Study: Physics

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident with satisfactory academic standing entering in the third or fourth year of Honors Math/Physics or Physics programs. Recipient will be selected on the basis of leadership qualities as demonstrated by involvement in university and community activities, and academic standing.

Canadian Business Leader Award for Undergraduate Students

Field of Study: Business

Conditions: Awarded to a student with satisfactory academic standing entering the fourth year of an undergraduate degree program in the School of Business. Recipient will be selected on the basis of leadership as demonstrated through community involvement, extracurricular activities, and academic standing.

Tom Chambers Awards

Field of Study: Engineering

Conditions: To be awarded annually to students with satisfactory academic standing enrolled in the second, third, or fourth year of Engineering. Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic standing and demonstrated leadership skills and potential through involvement in community and/or extracurricular activities.

Marlene J. Cherry 3 Generation Award

Field of Study: Education, Music, and Business

Conditions: Awarded to a student with satisfactory academic standing entering the third or fourth year of study in each of the Faculty of Education, Alberta School of Business, and Faculty of Arts with a major in Music. Selection based on academic standing, demonstrated leadership through extracurricular involvement in University and/or community organizations, and financial need. Preference given to a student with demonstrated intent to pursue career opportunities in a rural community. If a candidate cannot be found in any one faculty the next highest ranking candidate from the other faculties will be considered

Delta Kappa Epsilon Award for Community Excellence

Field of Study: Open

Conditions: Awarded to student(s) with a minimum GPA of 3.0 entering the second year of an undergraduate degree. Selection based on demonstrated community involvement and academic achievement. Community involvement is inclusive of, but not limited to, sports participation, extracurricular participation and volunteerism.

Education Students' Association Citizenship Award

Field of Study: Education

Conditions: Awarded to a student with satisfactory academic standing entering the second, third, or fourth year of study for a Bachelor of Education. Selection based on outstanding leadership in Education as demonstrated through volunteering in education related settings that contribute to the wider community, and positive contributions to student life through campus volunteer activities. Recipients are eligible to receive this award once in their academic career.

Education Students' Association Leadership Award

Field of Study: Education

Conditions: Awarded to a student with satisfactory academic standing enrolled in an undergraduate degree program in the Faculty of Education. Recipient will be selected on the basis of demonstrated leadership through participation in volunteer activities on campus and in the wider community that reflect positively on the Faculty of Education. Preference will be given to students who are not members of the Education Students' Association Council. Recipients are eligible to receive this award once in their academic career.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car Foundation Award

Field of Study: School of Business

Conditions: Awarded to a student with satisfactory academic standing entering the third or fourth year of study for a Bachelor of Commerce. Selection based on demonstrated leadership through involvement and participation in university or community organizations, sports or cultural activities and academic achievement. This award is open to a student who has completed a minimum of 21 credits within the academic year.

Chancellor-Emeritus John Ferguson and Mrs Bunny Ferguson Service Award

Field of Study: Open

Conditions: Awarded to a student with satisfactory academic standing in any year of an undergraduate degree program. Recipient will be selected on the basis of demonstrated commitment to improving the spirit of caring on campus or in the community through participation in one or more of the following activities: student government, student organizations, student services, community service, and volunteer activities.

J Roger Flumerfelt Leadership Award

Field of Study: Open

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student with satisfactory academic standing entering the second, third or fourth year of studies of any undergraduate degree program. Recipient will be selected on the basis of demonstrated leadership through involvement and participation in university or community organizations. Preference will be given to a student with demonstrated intention to use the funds to attend conferences, seminars or other student activities that promote understanding of greater Canadian unity and East - West goodwill or alternatively for international goodwill.

Mary Foster Memorial Award

Field of Study: Open

Conditions: Awarded to students with satisfactory academic standing entering or continuing in the second, third, or fourth year of an undergraduate degree. Selection based on leadership qualities as demonstrated by university or community involvement or extracurricular activities, and academic standing. Preference given to students who graduated from a high school in rural Alberta.

Gardener Brothers Leadership Scholarship in Business

Field of Study: Business

Conditions: To be awarded annually to students with superior academic achievement enrolled in the second last year of studies of an undergraduate degree program in the School of Business. Recipients will be selected on the basis of community leadership and academic standing. In the event that two or more exceptional candidates are identified the award will be split.

Warren Gee Cloverdale Paint Memorial Leadership Scholarship

Field of Study: Business

Conditions: To be awarded annually to an Alberta or British Columbia resident with superior academic achievement who is registered in either of the final two years of an undergraduate degree program in the School of Business. Recipients will be selected on the basis of demonstrated leadership through involvement and participation in university or community organizations, sports activities, or cultural activities and academic standing.

Sarah and Martin Gouin Family Scholarship in Arts

Conditions: Awarded to students with superior academic achievement entering the third or fourth year of an undergraduate degree program in the Faculty of Arts. Recipients will be selected on the basis of demonstrated leadership through involvement and participation in university or community organizations, sporting and/or cultural activities, and academic achievement.

Lou Hyndman Edmonton Glenora Awards

Field of Study: Law, History, Political Science, Education, Business, Economics, Canadian Studies, Women's Studies, Anthropology, Psychology or Sociology

Conditions: To be awarded annually to students with satisfactory academic standing (on a minimum of 24 credits) registered in the second last year of an undergraduate degree program. Recipients will be selected on the basis of demonstrated leadership through involvement and participation in university or community organizations, sports activities, cultural or political activities and academic standing. This award is renewable for a second year contingent upon the recipient achieving satisfactory academic standing on a minimum of 24 credits taken during the first year of the award.

John and Eileen Jorgens Scholarships

Field of Study: Any program in the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences

Conditions: To be awarded annually to Alberta residents with superior academic achievement enrolled in a degree program in the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences. Recipients will be selected on the basis of leadership qualities as demonstrated by community involvement and extracurricular activities and academic standing. Preference will be given to applicants from an Alberta farming or ranching family where the primary income of the family is derived from the farm/ranch and/or who are entering the third or fourth year of Agricultural Economics, Agricultural/Food Business Management, Nutrition and Food Sciences, Environmental Economics, Environmental and Conservation Sciences. Please note that this is only a preference and students from urban centres or also encouraged to apply.

Shing and Constance King Leadership Scholarship

Field of Study: Faculty of Business, Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation and the Faculty of Science

Conditions: Awarded to a student with superior academic achievement continuing in any year of study in the School of Business with a major in Accounting, Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation (Bachelor of Physical Education with a degree program concentration in Cultural and Managerial Studies of Sports and Leisure), or the Faculty of Science with Honours in Chemistry, with preference given to a student with a demonstrated interest in analytical chemistry. Selection based on demonstrated leadership through involvement and participation in University or community organizations. This award will alternate yearly between Faculties, beginning with the School of Business and followed by the Faculty of Physical Education and then the Faculty of Science. Should no eligible candidate be found in any given year, those in the two remaining Faculties will be considered.

Allan and Colleen Lefever Leadership Award

Field of Study: Education

Conditions: Awarded to an undergraduate student with satisfactory academic standing entering the third or fourth year of the Bachelor of Education in the Elementary or Secondary Education program, specializing in social studies. Recipient will be selected on the basis of demonstrated leadership through involvement and participation in university or community organizations, and academic standing. Preference will be given to Alberta residents from outside the cities of Edmonton and Calgary.

Reginald Charles Lister Memorial Scholarship

Field of Study: Open

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a full-time student with superior academic achievement registered in the second last year of studies who has attended the University of Alberta for at least the two previous years. Recipients will be selected on the basis of contributions made to campus life and to the University of Alberta community. Previous recipients of the Alumni Association's Maimie S Simpson Memorial Scholarship and the 75th Anniversary Scholarship are not eligible for this award.

Funded by: The University of Alberta Alumni Association in honour of Reginald Charles Lister who spent almost 50 years serving the University, many of them as Superintendent of Student Residences.

Peter Lougheed Scholarships

Field of Study: Open

Conditions: To be awarded annually to students with superior academic achievement registered in either of the final two years of an undergraduate degree program at the University of Alberta. Recipients will be selected on the basis of demonstrated leadership through involvement and participation in university or community organizations, sports activities, or cultural activities and academic achievement.

Matthew McCauley Memorial Prize in Education

Field of Study: Education

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement enrolled in the first, second, or third year of studies in the Faculty of Education who is a graduate of an Edmonton high school. Recipient will be selected on the basis of academic standing and leadership qualities as demonstrated by community involvement and extracurricular activities.

Funded by: Endowed by the family and friends of the late Matthew McCauley, a founding trustee and first chairman of the Edmonton Public School Board. Historians proclaimed him Father of the Edmonton School System.

Dr. Gary McPherson Leadership Scholarship

Field of Study: Open

Conditions: Awarded to an Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident who is living in Alberta and entering any year of study. Selection based on outstanding leadership, especially in the area of disability, and/or initiative to improve the lives of other people while attending a post-secondary institution in Alberta.

Judith Lynn Millar Memorial Scholarship

Field of Study: Open

Conditions: To be awarded annually to students with superior academic achievement registered in the second, third or fourth year of an undergraduate degree program at the University of Alberta. E. Barry Mitchelson Leadership Scholarship

Field of Study: Physical Education and Recreation

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement entering the third or fourth year of studies in the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation. Recipient will be selected on the basis of academic standing and demonstrated leadership in the general field of physical education and recreation, student life and governance, and/or athletics.

Robert M Pogue Award

Field of Study: Business

Conditions: To be awarded in even-numbered years to an Alberta resident with satisfactory academic standing entering the third or fourth year of a degree program in the School of Business. Recipient will be selected on the basis of demonstrated leadership through involvement and participation in university or community organizations, sports activities, or cultural activities and on academic standing. Preference will be given to a student with demonstrated financial need.

Prime Ministers Conversation Series Scholarship

Field of Study: Open

Conditions: Awarded to student(s) with superior academic achievement entering the second, third or fourth year of any undergraduate degree program. Selection based on demonstrated leadership (community activities, student and volunteer organizations, and local, provincial, or national organizations) and academic standing at the University of Alberta.

Funded by: Established to commemorate this historic Centenary event, the Prime Ministers Conversation Series, this fund will support future generations of University of Alberta students.

Professional Agrologists Award (Edmonton Branch)

Field of Study: Agriculture, Nutrition and Food Science, Environmental and Conservation Sciences, Animal Health

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student with satisfactory academic standing (grade point average of 3.0 or higher) who is registered in a program of courses that when completed will make the individual eligible for membership in the Alberta Institute of Agrologists. Recipient will be selected on the basis of demonstrated commitment, leadership, contribution and initiative at the University, in the community, in the agricultural industry, and the profession of Agrology. Recipient must have completed a minimum of 60 units of course weight. Preference will be given to a student who has completed 90 units of course weight.

Field of Study: Medicine

The recipient will be selected on the basis of academic standing and demonstrated leadership through involvement and participation in University and community organizations.

Field of Study: Engineering

Conditions: To be awarded annually to undergraduate students with superior academic achievement enrolled in the third or fourth year in the Faculty of Engineering. Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic standing and involvement in extracurricular activities, eg. community service, student government, sports or the arts. Preference will be given to those interested in pursuing a career in the petroleum industry. Students with disabilities and Aboriginal student(s) (Aboriginal as defined under the Constitution Act, 1982, Section 35 (2) or person(s) accepted by one of the Aboriginal peoples of Canada as a member of their community) are encouraged to apply.

Preference given to a student enrolled in the Peter Lougheed Leadership College.

Stowkowy Scholarship in Engineering

Field of Study: Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering

Conditions: Awarded to a student with superior academic achievement entering or enrolled in the second year of an undergraduate degree in Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering. Selection based on academic achievement as well as community service, athletic involvement, and/or volunteer work. Part-time students are not eligible to receive this scholarship.

Conditions: Awarded to student(s) with satisfactory academic standing entering the second, third, or fourth year of study of an undergraduate degree program in the Faculty of Engineering who makes an outstanding contribution to the University and/or greater community. Selection based on: contributions to the community through active involvement and demonstrated leadership in areas such as community service, student government or projects, volunteering and mentoring activities, and academic standing.

T4K Undergraduate Leadership Scholarships

Field of Study: Open

Conditions: To be awarded annually to students with superior academic achievement registered in the second, third or fourth year of an undergraduate degree program at the University of Alberta. Recipients will be selected on the basis of demonstrated leadership through involvement and participation in university or community organizations, sports activities, or cultural activities, and academic standing.

TD Meloche Monnex Leadership Award

Field of Study: Open

Conditions: Awarded to a student with satisfactory academic standing enrolled in any year of an undergraduate degree and who are children, grandchildren or great grandchildren of an alumnus. Selection based on demonstrated leadership through involvement in campus or community service or volunteerism, and academic standing. Applicant must not be in receipt of a major award in the current year greater than $5,000.

Tom Marrie Excellence in Leadership Student Award

Field of Study: Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry

Conditions: Awarded to an undergraduate student with satisfactory academic standing in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. Selection based on demonstrated excellence in leadership as evidenced by leadership and vision in student initiatives and/or the possession of personality and skills that lead people to achieve a common goal.

Bill Thoman Memorial Scholarship in Real Property Development

Conditions: Awarded to a student with satisfactory academic standing entering the third or fourth year of an undergraduate program. Selection based on leadership qualities as demonstrated by involvement in university and community activities and demonstrated intention to work in the real property development industry.

University of Alberta Centenary Undergraduate Awards

Field of Study: Open

Conditions: Awarded to student(s) with satisfactory academic standing with a maximum 3.4 GPA entering the second year of study for any undergraduate degree. Selection based on demonstrated volunteer involvement in extra curricular activities on campus and in the community, with preference given to student(s) involved both on and off campus. Eligible student(s) must not have received any awards or scholarships in their first year. Student(s) must complete their first year of study at the University of Alberta.

William S Ziegler Leadership Award

Field of Study: Engineering

Conditions: To be awarded annually to an undergraduate student with satisfactory academic standing registered in the Faculty of Engineering. Recipient will be selected on the basis of demonstrated leadership skills and potential through involvement in community and/or extracurricular activities. Preference will be given to a student in financial need.
