The following scholarships are part of the Faculty/Department Scholarship Competition.

Alberta Retired Teachers Association Award

Field of Study: Education

Value: $1,000

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student with satisfactory academic standing of at least 3.0 who has completed the Introductory Professional Term within an undergraduate degree program in the Faculty of Education. Recipients will be selected on the basis of demonstrated excellence in the student teaching experience and academic standing. Preference will be given to students who have shown excellence and an ongoing commitment to working with young people in either paid or volunteer positions (ie coaching, youth groups, tutoring, mentoring etc).

Alpha Chapter Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Memorial Award

Field of Study: Education

Value: $500

Number: 1

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student with satisfactory academic standing completing the third year of the Bachelor of Education program and proceeding into fourth year in the immediate next session. Recipient will be selected on the basis of academic standing.

Funded by: The Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Edmonton.

Margaret Ann Brine Scholarship in Music Education

Field of Study: Music Education

Value: $1,250

Conditions: Awarded to a continuing or convocating student with superior academic achievement in the Bachelor of Education program with a major in Music. Selection based on academic standing.

Funded by: Endowed by the Edmonton Musical Club upon its dissolution in 1973.

Aileen Charlotte Driscoll Scholarship

Conditions: To be awarded annually to an honors student with superior academic achievement convocating with a Bachelor of Education degree who has demonstrated intent to continue his/her studies of French in France and to teach at least one year in the province of Alberta thereafter. Selection based on academic standing.

Education Alumni Scholarship

Conditions: Awarded to a student with superior academic achievement enrolled in the Bachelor of Education degree program who have completed the Advanced Practicum Term portion of their program. Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic achievement. Preference will be given to the student who has shown excellence in, and an ongoing commitment to, working with young people in either paid or volunteer positions such as coaching, youth groups, tutoring, mentoring, etc.

Education Society of Edmonton Undergraduate Scholarship

Conditions: Awarded to a student with superior academic achievement entering the fourth year of a Bachelor of Education program. Recipient will be selected on the basis of academic achievement, leadership potential, and promise of professional competence.

Fellows Family Award in Education

Conditions: Awarded to a student with satisfactory academic standing entering the third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Education. Selection based on academic standing. Preference given to a student whose primary residence is outside of the city of Edmonton.

Milton Ezra Lazerte Gold Medal

Conditions: The medal is awarded to the student who has shown the highest general proficiency in the final two years of the Bachelor of Education program.

EE and GS Lord Memorial Prize

Field of Study: Education

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student in the certifying year of the Faculty of Education who is judged to be the outstanding student teacher in the final practicum of any of the program routes of the faculty. Each applicant will be scored by a Field Experiences Associate, who is not known to the applicant, and selection will be made by the faculty awards committee.

Sgt. George R. Miok Memorial Scholarship

Conditions: Awarded to students with superior academic achievement entering the third or fourth year of study in the Faculty of Education. Selection based on academic standing. Preference given to students who are serving or have served in the Canadian Armed Forces or Reserves.

John Harold Louis Moreau Scholarship

Field of Study: Education

Value: Variable, maximum allocation is $11,000

Conditions: To be awarded annually to students with superior academic achievement who are bilingual in Canada's official languages and have completed the APT portion of their program in the Faculty of Education. Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic standing and must demonstrate oral and written proficiency in French and English. The recipients must successfully complete at least one course in the methods of teaching English or French as a second language (see Department for list of eligible courses). Preference will be given to students who have declared Second Languages: French as their major/minor, and who intend to teach in both official languages of Canada, French and English, upon convocation.

Evelyn and Gene Norville Memorial Scholarship

Field of Study: Education

Value: $500, renewable up to three years, for a total of $1,500

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident with superior academic achievement who is also an Alberta resident, entering the second year of studies in the Faculty of Education. Recipient will be chosen on the basis of academic standing with preference given to those in financial need. This award is renewable for a further two years provided the recipient has achieved first class standing in the previous year.

Steve and Olga Onusko Memorial Scholarship

Field of Study: Elementary Education

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student on the basis of superior academic achievement and demonstrated leadership in 300 or 400 level required courses in the Elementary Education route, Faculty of Education.

Funded by: Endowed by friends and family in memory of Steve J and Olga Onusko.

Application/Nomination Procedure: Prepare a cover letter outlining your qualifications in relation to the award criteria and include the names and contact information of two Faculty of Education instructors who can attest to your demonstrated leadership in their course. Submit your application to Undergraduate Student Services by May 1st.

Michael Phair Leadership Award

Conditions: Awarded to students with satisfactory academic standing entering the second, third, or fourth year of studies in an undergraduate degree program. Selection based on demonstrated leadership qualities and involvement in extracurricular and community activities. Preference given to students who have demonstrated commitment to the advancement of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans-identified, two-spirited, or queer communities.

Funded by: The Friends of Michael Phair, in recognition of his dedicated public service to the City of Edmonton and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans-identified, two-spirited and queer communities of Alberta.

John & Barbara Poole Scholarships

Conditions: Awarded to students with superior academic achievement entering the first year of an after degree program in the Faculty of Education. Selection based on academic standing with preference given to students who have graduated from an Art & Design, Drama, Music or Dance undergraduate degree program.

Edna Catherine Press Memorial Prize

Field of Study: Elementary Education

Value: $1,500

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student completing the fourth year in a Bachelor of Education program (Elementary Education route) on the basis of superior academic achievement and excellence in student teaching.

Funded by: Endowed by husband and friends of the late Professor Emeritus Edna Catherine Press.

Application/Nomination Procedure: Submit your Advanced Professional Term Student Teaching Evaluation to the Office of the Assistant Dean (Field Experiences), Faculty of Education, 1-107 Education North by May 1st. No further documentation is required.

Susan Carol (Weston) Reid Medal

Field of Study: Education

Value: $500 and a Sterling Gilt Medal

Conditions: Awarded to the convocating student who has achieved the highest academic standing in Career and Technology Studies: Human Ecology Major, or BSc in Human Ecology/BEd (Secondary) combined degree and has demonstrated excellence in student teaching.

Don Wright Scholarship in Music Education

Field of Study: Practical Instrumental Arranging

Value: $4,500

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a full-time student working toward the Bachelor of Education degree with a Music Major or Minor who has demonstrated a talent and achievement in the field of practical instrumental arranging and orchestration, with particular reference to music education.

Don Wright Scholarship in Music Education

Field of Study: Vocal and Choral Music

Value: $4,500

Number: 1

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a full-time student with superior academic achievement working towards the Bachelor of Education degree with a Music Major or Minor, or the combined Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Education program, who has demonstrated a special aptitude for vocal and choral music and the teaching of the same, especially in grades 5 to 9 (the changing voice).
