The following scholarships are part of the Faculty/Department Scholarship Competition.

Muriel Affleck Prize

Field of Study: Early Childhood Education

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement entering the fourth year of studies in the early childhood education program. Recipient will be selected on the basis of academic standing in the field of reading. This award may be given to a student taking less than a full normal course load.

Funded by: Endowed by family and friends of Dr Muriel Affleck in recognition of her contribution to early childhood education and reading.

Anne Carmichael Scholarship in Elementary Education

Field of Study: Elementary Education

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a full-time student entering second, third or fourth year in the Department of Elementary Education on the basis of superior academic achievement.

Michael and Kate Dary Memorial Scholarship in Education

Field of Study: Education

Conditions: Awarded to students with superior academic achievement enrolled in any year of the Bachelor of Education Elementary Education Route. Selection based on academic standing. Preference given to students with an Art and Design degree enrolled in the Bachelor of Education (After Degree) Elementary Education Route.

Margaret Ellis Scholarship in Elementary Education

Field of Study: Elementary Education

Conditions: Awarded to a student with superior academic achievement entering the fourth year of the BEd degree program majoring in Elementary Education. Recipient will be selected on the basis of academic achievement and demonstrated involvement, both in the school and in the community, in physical activities and sports for children.

Faculty of Education Youth Choirs Prize

Field of Study: Education

Conditions: Awarded in odd-numbered years to a student in any year of a Bachelor of Education degree who achieved the highest academic standing in EDEL 325 and at least one additional general or choral music education course, and who has demonstrated a commitment to developing children's singing skills in the classroom and/or choral setting.

Friends of the University Scholarship in Early Childhood Education

Field of Study: Elementary Education

Conditions: Awarded to students with superior academic achievement entering the fourth year of an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Education Elementary route. Selection based on academic standing.

Wendy Konoza Memorial Award in Education

Field of Study: Education

Conditions: Awarded to an Alberta resident with satisfactory academic standing convocating with a Bachelor of Education (Elementary Route). Selection based on demonstrated excellence during the Advanced Professional Term student teaching experience. Preference given to students who have demonstrated excellence and an ongoing commitment to working with young people in paid or volunteer positions (i.e., coaching, youth groups, tutoring, mentoring, etc.).

Application/Nomination Procedure: Submit a resume and cover letter outlining award qualifications, a copy of the Teaching Practicum Report for the APT, and a letter of reference attesting to excellence and ongoing commitment to working with young people in paid or volunteer positions. Dr Marie Meyer Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship

Field of Study: Elementary Education, Reading and Language Education

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a convocating student in Elementary Education who has shown distinction in reading and language education. Recipient will have a minimum GPA of 3.5 overall.

Music of the Spheres 2000 Scholarship

Field of Study: Elementary Education, minor in Music Education

Conditions: Awarded to a student with superior academic achievement who is convocating from the Bachelor of Education degree with a major in Elementary Education. Selection based on the highest academic standing in EDEL 325 and at least two additional music education courses.

Frances Olson Scholarship in Early Literacy

Field of Study: Elementary Education

Conditions: Awarded to students with superior academic achievement entering the fourth year of the Bachelor of Education in Elementary Education. Selection based on a demonstrated commitment to the early literacy development of children in the school and/or community.

Application/Nomination Procedure: Submit a resume and cover letter outlining award qualifications, along with names and phone numbers of references who can verify involvement, to the Department of Elementary Education, 551 Education South by May 1st.

Steve and Olga Onusko Memorial Scholarship

Field of Study: Elementary Education

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student on the basis of superior academic achievement and demonstrated leadership in 300 or 400 level required courses in the Elementary Education route, Faculty of Education.

Funded by: Endowed by friends and family in memory of Steve J and Olga Onusko.

Application/Nomination Procedure: Prepare a cover letter outlining your qualifications in relation to the award criteria and include two references from Faculty of Education instructors who can attest to your demonstrated leadership in their course. Submit your application to Undergraduate Student Services by May 1st.

Edna Catherine Press Memorial Prize

Field of Study: Elementary Education

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student completing the fourth year in a Bachelor of Education program (Elementary Education route) on the basis of superior academic achievement and excellence in student teaching.

Funded by: Endowed by husband and friends of the late Professor Emeritus Edna Catherine Press.

Application/Nomination Procedure: Submit your Advanced Professional Term Student Teaching Evaluation to the Office of the Assistant Dean (Field Experiences), Faculty of Education, 1-107 Education North by May 1st. No further documentation is required.

The Ted Harrison Award in Art Education

Field of Study: Faculty of Education

Conditions: Awarded to a student with satisfactory academic standing entering the fourth year of study in the Faculty of Education studying Art Education. Selection based on academic standing, a demonstrated creativity in art and teaching, and leadership through involvement and participation in University or community organizations.

Funded by: Established by Ted Harrison, '77 BEd, '05 LLD (Hon).

Application/Nomination Procedure: Submit a resume and cover letter outlining award qualifications, and a letter of reference attesting to your creativity in art and teaching, preferably from your EDEL 302 instructor. Applications should be submitted to the Department of Elementary Education, 551 Education South by May 1st.

Carla Try Memorial Elementary Education Scholarship

Field of Study: Elementary Education

Conditions: Awarded to a student with superior academic achievement entering the final year of studies in Elementary Education. Selection based on academic standing and a commitment to the education of elementary level students, as demonstrated by community involvement or volunteer activity.

Funded by: Endowed by the Faculty of Education and the family and friends of Carla Try, who posthumously achieved her Bachelor of Education degree in Elementary Education. Carla's commitment to children and their education will be forever recognized through this scholarship (Carla Try, 1979-2001).

Pearl Turner Memorial Award

Field of Study: Early Childhood Education

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student entering the fourth year of studies in the Faculty of Education specializing in early childhood education. Recipient will be selected on the basis of academic standing and personal and professional qualities. This award may be offered to a student taking less than a full normal course load.

Funded by: Originally endowed by the Edmonton Branch of the Canadian Committee on Early Childhood (OMEP), and currently maintained by family and friends of Pearl Turner in recognition of her contribution to early childhood education.
