The following scholarships are part of the Faculty/Department Scholarship Competition.

Eugene Brody Scholarship in History

Field of Study: History

Conditions: To be awarded annually to the Student entering the third year of the History in the Honors or BA Special programs with the highest grade point average in the first two years, providing that first class standing is attained.

Application/Nomination Procedure: By nomination from the Department of History and Classics

A Doris Schuh Award in Western Canadian History

Field of Study: History and Classics

Conditions: Awarded to a student with satisfactory academic standing entering the third or fourth year of study for a Bachelor of Arts with a major in History. Selection based on demonstrated interest in Western Canadian History and academic standing. Recipient must not have received other awards in the field of History in the same year.

History and Heroes Foundation Award

Field of Study: Open

Conditions: Awarded to students with satisfactory academic standing enrolled in any year of an undergraduate degree at the University of Alberta. Selection based on academic standing, completion of 6 units of course weight in the history of Alberta or Canada, and demonstrated leadership and community service.

Funded by: Annually funded by the History and Heroes Fund at the Edmonton Community Foundation. Their Honours Lois and Doug Mitchell created the History & Heroes Foundation to advance Albertans' interest in and knowledge of our province and our people's contribution to Canada's history.

Morden Heaton Long Memorial Scholarship in Honors History

Field of Study: Honors History

Conditions: Offered to the third year honors student with the best record, conditional upon the student's registration in the fourth year of Honors History.

Funded by: Mrs Winnifred Long, in memory of her late husband, a former head of the Department of History.

Application/Nomination Procedure: By nomination from the Department of History and Classics

Marilyn R Love Scholarship in History

Field of Study: History

Conditions: Awarded to a Canadian citizen or permanent resident with superior academic achievement entering the third year of any Bachelor of Arts Honours in History. Selection based on academic standing. Renewal is based on superior academic achievement and continuation in the Honors in History.

Robert T.E. McLaughlin and Mary Janet (neé Matheson) McLaughlin Award in Canadian History

Field of Study: Faculty of Arts - History and Classics

Conditions: Awarded to a student with satisfactory academic standing entering the third or fourth year of study for a Bachelor of Arts in History. Selection based on demonstrated interest in the field of Canadian history, academic standing and demonstrated community involvement on campus or in the community-at-large.   The recipient must have completed a minimum of one Canadian history course and be registered in a minimum of one Canadian history course. 

Funded by: Endowed by members of the Douglas R. Matheson family. Robert T.E. McLaughlin graduated from Vermillion School of Agriculture, and Janet McLaughlin, RN, graduated from the U of A (BSc in Zoology, 1961). The McLaughlin Award recognizes the McLaughlins' significant contributions to the life of Canada through volunteer work in education, athletics, civic life and politics. It acknowledges their passionate interest in Canadian history and their desire to inspire that passion in others.

Application/Nomination Procedure: Submit letter of application to the Coordinator of Canadian History in the Department of History and Classics by October 1st.

Dr Geneva Misener Memorial Scholarship in Classics

Field of Study: Classics

Conditions: To be awarded to a student of outstanding academic merit completing the third year of an honors program in Classics.

Funded by: Bequest of the late Dr Misener.

Harold W Riley Memorial Scholarship

Field of Study: History

Conditions: Offered annually to a student of outstanding merit who has shown a special interest in the history of Western Canada, provided the student's record is otherwise satisfactory and provided the recipient is returning as an undergraduate student in the next academic year.

Application/Nomination Procedure: By nomination from the Department of History and Classics

Colonel Gilbert Edward Sanders Memorial Scholarship

Field of Study: Western Canadian History

Conditions: To be awarded annually to students with superior academic achievement entering the third or fourth year of a degree program in the Faculty of Arts, majoring in Western Canadian History. Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic standing. Preference given to students with indicated financial need.

Mary Trumpener Scholarship in History

Field of Study: History

Conditions: Awarded to a student with superior academic achievement entering any year of an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Arts majoring in History.  Selection based on demonstrated interest in central European history, and academic standing.
