American Historical Society of Germans From Russia (Edmonton District Chapter) Scholarship

Field of Study: German

Conditions: To be awarded annually on the basis of superior academic achievement and financial need to a student who will further his or her German studies by the scholarship.

Marian Campbell Memorial Book Prizes

Field of Study: Modern Languages

Conditions: To be awarded annually to the student who receives the highest academic standing in each of first year Swedish (SWED 111 or 112), second year Swedish (SWED 211or 212), first year Norwegian (NORW 111 or 112), second year Norwegian (NORW 211 or 212), first year Danish (DANSK 111 or 112), and second year Danish (DANSK 211 or 212).

Marian Campbell Memorial Prize

Field of Study: Modern Languages-Scandinavian

Conditions: To be awarded annually to the student with the highest academic standing in Scandinavian courses who is enrolled in the honors program in Scandinavian or who is majoring in Scandinavian in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies. If no qualified applicant can be found, no scholarship will be given.

Lillian Cobb Memorial Scholarship in Romance Languages

Field of Study: Romance Languages

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement who is majoring in Romance Languages in the Faculty of Arts. Recipient will be on the Dean's Honors List and have at least 30 units of course weight remaining in their program. Preference will be given to a student in financial need.

Domecki Family Prize in Polish Studies

Field of Study: Polish

Conditions: Awarded to a student with superior academic achievement in either first or second year Polish language. Recipient will be selected on the basis of academic achievement and financial need.

Edelweiss-Club Scholarship

Field of Study: German

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student in senior German courses to further his or her knowledge of German language and culture. The selection is made on the basis of superior academic achievement. Financial need may also be a consideration.

Manoel Faucher Prize in French

Field of Study: French

Conditions: To be awarded annually to the convocating student with the highest average over the last two years in French Literature courses.

Catherine Folinsbee Memorial Scholarship

Field of Study: Modern Languages

Conditions: To be awarded annually on the basis of superior academic achievement to a major or honors language student from the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies who is entering third or fourth year. The purpose of the Scholarship is to provide some financial assistance to a student wanting to attend a program of formal language study in an environment where one of the languages offered by the Department is the official language.

Sofia Markovna Gampel Memorial Prize for Nineteenth Century Russian Literature

Field of Study: Russian Literature

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student of outstanding merit in a 300 level Russian Literature course.

German Canadian Business and Professional Association of Alberta Prize in Senior and Honors Courses

Field of Study: Germanic Languages

Conditions: To be awarded annually to an undergraduate student for superior academic achievement in senior or honors courses offered in Germanic Languages.

EJH Greene Memorial Scholarships in Romance Languages

Field of Study: Romance Languages

Conditions: To be awarded annually on the basis of superior academic achievement to a student entering third or fourth year in the general or honors French, Italian, Latin American Studies, or Spanish program (if Combined Honors, with the principal subject in a Romance Language) of the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies.

Funded by: Endowed by family and friends of EJH Greene, former head of the Department of Romance Languages.

Italian Women's Society Prize in Italian Language Studies

Field of Study: Italian

Conditions: Awarded annually to a student on the basis of superior academic achievement in a senior Italian language course at the University of Alberta.

Mrs Kathe & Mr Siegfried Klotsche Scholarship in German

Field of Study: German Language

Conditions: Awarded to a student with superior academic achievement continuing in or convocating from the Faculty of Arts with a major or minor in German language studies or a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in German. Selection based on academic achievement in relevant courses (as determined by the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies). Preference given to a student with demonstrated volunteerism in Edmonton's German community. If no candidates display demonstrated involvement in Edmonton's German community, preference given to a student with demonstrated volunteerism in social and/or community-based organization(s).

Ulean and Eudoxia Kushnirevs'ka-Tkachenko Prize in Russian

Field of Study: Russian Language

Conditions: To be awarded annually on the basis of superior academic achievement in any senior Russian course, to a student registered in a program of studies at the University of Alberta with Russian as a subject of concentration, provided the student's record is otherwise satisfactory. Fourth-year students planning to pursue graduate studies in Russian at the University of Alberta are also eligible.

Aleksander Matejko Memorial Prize

Field of Study: Polish

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement who has completed courses that deal with the history, sociology, language, and/or culture of Poland. Recipient will be chosen on the basis of academic standing on the Polish courses completed. Preference will be given to a student with financial need.

Dr Geneva Misener Memorial Scholarship in Modern Languages

Field of Study: Modern Languages

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement completing the third year of an honors program with a principal subject area in the Department of Modern Languages. Recipient will be selected on the basis of academic standing.

Funded by: Bequest of the late Dr Misener.

Application/Nomination Procedure: By nomination from the Faculty of Arts

Gregory and Julia Patrick Award in Ukrainian Culture

Field of Study: Ukrainian

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a graduate or undergraduate student who submits the best proposal for a research project in the area of Ukrainian performing arts or ritual. Recipients will be selected on the basis of the proposal submitted and financial need.

Funded by: Endowed by the late Helen Tkachenko in honour of her nephew Gregory and his wife Julia

Application/Nomination Procedure: Applicants are to submit a one page research proposal to the Huculak Chair Ukrainian Culture and Ethnography, Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies, by March 31 of each year.

Anna and Wasyl Pylypiuk Memorial Prize

Field of Study: Ukrainian Language, Linguistics, and Literature

Conditions: Awarded to an undergraduate student with superior academic achievement in any senior level Ukrainian Language, Linguistics, or Literature course. Preference will be given to an undergraduate student majoring in Ukrainian Culture, Language and Literature. Alternatively, this prize may be awarded on the basis of superior academic achievement to a student registered in a MA or PhD degree program with a focus in either Ukrainian Linguistics or Literature.

The Gowrah Ramlugon Memorial Award

Field of Study: Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies

Conditions: Awarded to a student entering the third or fourth year of study in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies, studying French language or French literature. Selection based on academic standing.

Funded by: Asvina Bissonauth in memory of her grandmother, Gowrah Ramlugon, who passed away in Mauritius on June 22, 2006. Gowrah's first languages were Creole and Hindi but loved and valued the French and English languages.

Application/Nomination Procedure: By nomination from the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies, based on applications received by May 1 in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies.

George Romaniuk Memorial Prize

Field of Study: Ukrainian Language

Conditions: Awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement in a 400-level Ukranian language, linguistics or translation course. Selection based on academic standing.

Doris Schuh Prize in Ukrainian Studies

Field of Study: culture, history, language, and/or literature of the Ukraine

Conditions: Awarded to an Alberta resident with superior academic achievement entering third or fourth year of an undergraduate degree program, who has successfully completed a course or courses in the area of culture, history, language, and/or literature of Ukraine. Recipient will be selected on the basis of academic achievement in these courses.

Vera Gordey Smith Memorial Prize

Field of Study: Ukrainian Folklore

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement in the Faculty of Arts studying Ukrainian Folklore. Recipient will be selected on the basis of academic standing in Ukrainian Folklore courses.

Helen Tkachenko Prize in Russian and/or Ukrainian Language

Field of Study: Russian and/or Ukrainian Language

Conditions: To be awarded annually to students in Russian 111 or 112 (Beginners' Russian) and/or Ukrainian 111 or 112 (Beginners' Ukrainian) with superior academic achievement. Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic standing. Preference will be given to students who do not have a substantial Russian or Ukrainian language background and who plan to study Russian and/or Ukrainian language at the University of Alberta in the future and have a demonstrated financial need.

Field of Study: Scandinavian Studies

Richard Young Scholarship

Field of Study: Spanish or Latin American Studies

Conditions: Awarded to a student with superior academic achievement entering the fourth year of an undergraduate degree program in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies, with a major or honors in Spanish or Latin American Studies. Selection based on academic achievement.
