The following scholarships are part of the Faculty/Department Scholarship Competition.

Alberta Baroque Music Society Scholarship in Music

Field of Study: Music

Conditions: To be awarded annually to an undergraduate or graduate student with superior academic achievement entering the third or fourth year of study in an undergraduate degree program or entering any year of a graduate degree program, in the Department of Music. Recipient will be selected on the basis of excellence in performing, academic standing, and demonstrated interest in Baroque music, and must play a traditional Baroque instrument (including voice). Recipients of the award may also be considered by the Alberta Baroque Society for an appearance with the Alberta Baroque Ensemble.

Alwaez Hasan and Rashida Nazarali Scholarship in Ethnomusicology

Field of Study: Faculty of Arts, Department of Music

Conditions: Awarded to a full-time undergraduate or graduate student with superior academic achievement (minimum grade point average equivalent to 3.5 on the University of Alberta grading scale). An undergraduate student recipient must be entering any year of study for a Bachelor of Music or a Bachelor of Arts, with a specialization in ethnomusicology. A graduate student recipient must be registered in a MA or PhD program within the research area of ethnomusicology. A student registered in a master's program is eligible to hold the award during the first or second year of their program. A student registered in a doctoral program is eligible to hold the award up to and including the fifth year of their program. Selection will be based on academic standing and preference will be given to a student who is studying music in the area of Muslim traditions and cultures.

ATI Award in Music

Field of Study: Music

Conditions: Awarded to a student with satisfactory academic standing entering the first year of a Bachelor of Music in the Faculty of Arts. Selection based on admission average and demonstrated outstanding performance in music. Preference given to a student who is majoring in a double reed or low brass instrument.

Beryl Barns Memorial Undergraduate Awards

Field of Study: Music

Conditions: To be awarded annually to students with satisfactory academic standing of at least 3.3 in Music courses enrolled full-time in Bachelor of Music program in practical studies (keyboard instruments, orchestral instruments, voice) or in music composition. A grade point average of 3.3 in Music courses will be expected in each year that the award is held. Awarded for a single year but renewable to a maximum of four years at the undergraduate level pending success in the yearly students' performance in their end-of-year performance juries.

Luc Barton Memorial Scholarship in Music

Field of Study: Music

Conditions: Awarded to a student with superior academic achievement enrolled in the third or fourth year of an undergraduate degree in the Department of Music. Selection based on musical merit and academic standing. Preference given to a student with a strong interest in science.

Edna and John Bullock Memorial Scholarship

Field of Study: Music (woodwind)

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a woodwind student with superior academic achievement entering the fourth year of the Bachelor of Music program at the University of Alberta. Recipient will be chosen on the basis of academic standing and musical merit. Preference will be given to a student with indicated financial need.

Anna Bychinsky Fine Arts Award in Music

Field of Study: Music

Conditions: Awarded to a student with satisfactory academic standing enrolled in the second or third year of any undergraduate degree in the Department of Music in the Faculty of Arts. Selection based on demonstrated accomplishment and promise in Music, and academic standing. The Award may be held only once by a student.

Frantisek Cikanek Memorial Award in Music

Field of Study: Music

Selection based on academic standing and musical merit. Preference given to a student in the area of cello performance.

Abigal Edith Condell Memorial Scholarship in Music

Field of Study: Music

Conditions: Awarded to a student with superior academic achievement at the end of the third year of the Bachelor of Music program. Recipient will be chosen on the basis of academic standing and outstanding merit in the Music program.

Richard Eaton Scholarship in Music

Field of Study: Music

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a convocating or continuing student with superior academic achievement in the Bachelor of Music program. Recipient will be selected on the basis of outstanding musical merit. If awarded to a convocating student the recipient must be continuing his or her musical education at an institution or under a teacher approved by the Department. If no suitable candidate can be found the award will not be given.

Selection based on academic standing and demonstrated excellence in violin, viola or vocal performance.

Field of Study: Joint Bachelor of Arts (Music)/Bachelor of Education (Music Education) degree program

Selection based on academic standing and demonstrated performance abilities, conducting skills, ability to play and instruct on various instruments, and aptitude for teaching.

John Newman Memorial Scholarship for Performance of Contemporary Music

Field of Study: Music

Conditions: Awarded annually to a student entering the second, third, or fourth year of the BMus or BMus (Honors) program based on superior academic achievement and who expresses initiative and exceptional accomplishment in the performance of contemporary music. For the purpose of this scholarship, contemporary music will be understood to mean music composed no more than thirty years before the year in which the award is made.

Funded by: Endowed by relatives, family and friends of the late John Newman. John Newman, a member of the Class of 1983, was a gifted clarinetist with a special interest in the performance of contemporary music.

Vienna Opera Ball Society Scholarship

Field of Study: Music

Conditions: To be awarded in even numbered years to a student with superior academic achievement entering the second, third or fourth year of the Bachelor of Music program whose major performance area is voice. Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic standing and outstanding talent as assessed by the voice faculty. In the previous year recipients must have completed a minimum 24 credits over the most recent September to April period (30 credits) to receive the prize.
